Backpacking
Essentials
Whenever you plan a backpacking trip make sure to carefully
select all the backpacking essentials that you will
need. Although you may not use all the backpacking
essentials every day, they can be life savers in an emergency.
Also, if you shop with prudence, these gear items can be
lightweight as well. Never leave for the outdoors without these
three backpacking essentials: a knife, a lighter, and a large
trash bag. A basic Swiss knife will suffice; a plastic
cigarette lighter will be more convenient than matches; and
yes, a sturdy garbage bag, which will not necessarily be just
for your trash.
A larger knife (machete ) might be essential when one needs
or desires to go off trail into thicker growth. A heavier ax or
knife is more effective when one has larger needs for
construction or for collecting firewood.
Summer sausage packs well for a short trip and is good for
lunches, so are peanut butter sandwiches, trail mix, and beef
jerky. Oatmeal for breakfast is great for cold, granola for
warm weather with powdered milk- these will give you much
needed carbohydrates.
A compass and a map can help to keep all backpacking and
hiking team members on the right trail throughout the trip.
These two essentials are the ones that are forgotten a lot of
times when packing the bundles for the trip. All the
backpacking gear reviews and hiking trail reviews are submitted
by the people just like you. For traveling on trails, the 15
minute series Green Trails is a good choice, among others. The
point is to carry a map appropriate for the area you will be in
and the activity you will be undertaking--and know how to use
it !
And have at least an extra day's rations in case of a
detour, losing the trail, or an injury. Take carbohydrates as
your primary content. Whether you are camping overnight or
merely lightweight backpacking along a hillside trail, you are
still prone to bites from bugs like praying mantis,
grasshoppers and even the seemingly meek and minute mosquitoes.
Worse, the encounter with these bugs is inevitable especially
when you spend the overnight camp near the lake and indulge
your group to star gazing or other nocturnal activities.
If your trip extends over a day and you plan to cook then do
take an aluminium cooking set too. Most travellers get work
labouring on building sites, waiting/cooking/cleaning in bars,
restaurants and cafes (hospitality), serving in shops (retail),
data entry, telephone sales or fruit picking. This eliminates
the need to pack additional cookware, packing quite lightly at
only 425 grams.
People whose feet are chronically cold in their sleeping
bags at night may enjoy a pair of down booties. On snowy trips,
it's convenient to have some means of walking around in the
snow without having to put your stiff, heavy ski boots or
mountaineering boots back on. Your sleeping bag should suit the
conditions. Most are marked with a temperature rating - if you
are hiking in the tropics a higher rating will sufice, but in
places where it gets cold, a lightweight bag with a very low
rating is better. Make sure you pack the knife in your luggage
for the hold, not the cabin, otherwise the baggage X-ray staff
will take it off you, never to be seen again.
